Film Analysis - 'The Thing' (Directed by John Carpenter)

Image
( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouZkkIsLiNg ) The film, 'The Thing' ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thing_(1982_film) ), directed by John Carpenter ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Carpenter ), is an incredible example of film making (especially when considering the amount of visual effects used for its time). The film opens with a strange alien ship entering Earths orbit, apparently unable to control itself, the craft descends onto the planet just before the opening title begins to flood the screen whilst intimidating music begins to play. The plot starts by introducing an all male group conducting some kind of research in Antarctic, during what seems to be an ordinary day out in the frozen continent, a Norwegian helicopter enters the area chasing a seemingly ordinary Husky. The two men aboard the helicopter seem deadly intent on killing the dog with their large stash of grenades and armed weaponry; the dangerous actions of the two man crew sets the team of English

Film Comparison - 'Do the Right Thing' and 'Casablanca'

Image
The Films 'Casablanca' ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casablanca_(film) ) and 'Do the Right Thing' ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do_the_Right_Thing ) are two very different films, however there are a few very specific comparable themes, the main one being the indifference and instability caused within a collected community composed of two differing factions (,'Casablanca's being the French and German inhabitants of the city and 'Do the Right Thing's being the varying ethnicities featured in the film).  The main plot of Casablanca follows a man named 'Rick' (mentioned in earlier analytical piece about the film) who runs 'Rick Cafe Americain' which serves as a home for illegal visa deals, within this cafe there are a variety of characters from across the globe, however the two main parties consist of the Germans and the French. The actions featured in 'Casablanca' are undertaken during World War Two, meaning that tension betwe

'No Country for Old Men' profiles - (Directed by the Coen Brothers)

Image
( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Country_for_Old_Men ) Sherif Bell (Old county sherif, humbled, religious) Sherif Bell represents the attachment to the old ways, he is in a sense trapped in an outdated mindset that he is genuinely terrified to live without. I believe, his presence in the film infers the inevitability death and the futility of trying to revert back to a time of youthful happiness, in a sense i find that his character is merely a sad, tired old husk that has lost its purpose, he is not active and he cannot win and that is the disparity that accompanies mortality. Anton Chigurh (Hitman, Mystery, foreign) ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anton_Chigurh ) Anton Chigurh is a terrifying character who I personally believe represents the presence of death, being both alien and unbeatable, his entire personality is that he has none, he is a man without a background or family and all we are given about him is his name and a warning, inferring that he plays beyond the

Film Analysis - 'No Country For Old Men' (Directed by the Coen brother, Joel and Ethan Coen)

'No Country for Old Men' ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38A__WT3-o0 ), directed by the Coen brothers ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coen_brothers ) is an intense action thriller that features the coinciding stories of a hitman Anton Chigurh (played by Javier Bardem ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Javier_Bardem )) and a small town welder and Vietnam veteran, Llewellyn Moss (played by Josh Brolin ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_Brolin )). The film opens with an interesting speech ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eZ6EACDKiE ) provided by Sheriff Bell (played by Tommy Lee Jones ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Lee_Jones )), it reveals some information regarding his character but mainly suggests the threat that Anton presents as an alien to the common way of think with his demented, crooked even, state of mind; his clothing is unsuited for his surroundings and his hair (though being a simple physical characteristic) introduces a sort of sleekness to his character,

Film Analysis and Comparison - 'Inside Man' (Directed by Spike Lee)

Image
'Inside Man' ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WRxsmqercg ) is an (action) crime thriller directed by Spike Lee ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spike_Lee ), The film features a bank heist that almost takes up the entirety of the film's two hour and nine minute running time. A group of criminals take control of an incredibly wealthy bank and make all workers and civilians inside submit into becoming hostages which play a crucial part in the plot's development. Throughout the film we follow the coinciding stories of a skilled detective by the name of Keith Fraizer (played by Denzel Washington ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denzel_Washington )) and Dalton Russel (played by Clive Owen ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clive_Owen ) the criminal mastermind behind the entire bank robbery. Despite the film's 'thriller' aspects, the entire plot is truly a battle of wits, which usually always works out for Dalton who always seems to be ten steps ahead. The constant

Film Analysis - 'Do the right thing' (directed by Spike Lee)

Image
'Do the right thing' ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ny631yQ-DM ), directed by Spike Lee ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spike_Lee ) is film that hits hard but only over a long period of time; it focuses on the injustices created by racism in a densely pack community and the instability caused by a lack of understanding and social equality. The film follows a variety characters (and gradually presents how they feel about their current situation and each other), however the two main protagonists would have to be 'Mookie', played by Spike Lee himself and 'Sal' (local pizzeria owner), played by Danny Aiello ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Aiello ). Mookie is a 25 year old delivery man who lives with his sister (Tina) and seems to prefer going along with the flow rather than making any actual changes to his life. He works for Sal, the owner of Sal's Famous Pizzeria, who is struggling to avoid conflict with the local black residence when they become ang

Film Analysis & Comparison - 'Clockers' (Directed by Spike Lee)

Image
'Clockers' ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZXeB8-PHu4 ) is a film with a 2 hour and 9 minute running time, directed by the critically acclaimed director, Spike Lee ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spike_Lee ).  The film mainly focuses on the racial stereotypes based around the distribution of drugs and the bonds shared between those who rely on the drug sales so as to maintain their way of life. Spike lee is well known for his focus in the field of racial injustice, however in this film he introduces a sort of comforting aesthetic to the concept of distributing products such as cocaine or marijuana. The story follows a young black man named 'Strike', played by Mekhi Phifer ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mekhi_Phifer ), whose life revolves around the selling of drugs and the issues caused by following such a trade. Strike works under a local drug lord known by the name of Rodney Little, played Delroy Lindo ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delroy_Lindo ), this man se
