Film Scene Analysis - 'Casablanca' (Introduction to Rick's Cafe Americain & Rick)

Image
The film 'Casablanca' was directed by Michael Curtiz ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Curtiz ) and produced by Hal B. Wallis ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hal_B._Wallis ), the film itself has been revered by any contemporary Film directors as being a masterpiece that truly stands out against almost all other films produced during its time. What makes 'Casablanca especially unique is the message of inspiration and change that is embodied by the French hero, Victor Lazlo and the tough but endearing act of Rick, the neutral American who is embodies America (as a country's) state in the war. One scene in particular that stands out is the first time the audience sees the exterior and more importantly the interior of Rick's Cafe Americain ( https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ricks+cafe+americain&rlz=1C5CHFA_enGB767GB767&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiDq8OhsZjXAhXFmBoKHUyqBbEQ_AUICigB&biw=1920&bih=1008 ), within the building th

Film Analysis - 'Blade Runner 2049' (Directed by Denis Villeneuve)

The film 'Blade Runner 2049' ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCcx85zbxz4 ), directed by Denis Villeneuve ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denis_Villeneuve ), expertly conveys the weight of this Earth's futuristic dystopian society much like its original predecessor, 'Blade Runner' ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eogpIG53Cis ) (a beautiful classic). The film itself focuses mainly upon a single synthetic humanoid simply referenced to as K (played by Ryan Gosling - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryan_Gosling ), as a synthetic he is one in millions ; known only as 'replicants', these mass produced human clones are used for slave labour across the ever increasing number of human controlled colony worlds. The main plot of the film follows K as he is tasked with finding a child born of a replicant who died during child birth as an emergency c-section was performed, during this investigation however, K begins to develop self doubt and eventually begins to realis

Film Analysis - 'Breathe' (Directed by Andy Serkis)

Image
The film 'Breathe' ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_YnYrLfjxA ), directed by Andy Serkis ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Serkis ) was an interesting watch with its 1 hour and 57 minute running time. The film itself covers the overall life story of a man named Robin Cavendish (played by Andrew Garfield -  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Garfield ). During his early years, Robin worked as a tea collector, working to find new tastes and earn his fortune; however during a trip to Kenya he became afflicted with a severe case of polio which permanently damaged the nerves in his spine, rendering him paralysed from the neck down, making him incapable of even breathing for himself (thus giving the film its name). As the plot continues to progress, it begins to explore a variety of interesting concepts, mainly how one with such a disability copes with the overwhelming sadness and frightfulness of being incapable of breathing without the assistance of a machine; it delves i

Film Studies BFI Trip Photographs

Image
Featured below is a small collection of photographs which i took during our (first) trip to the BFI London Film Festival, where we travelled (from East Croydon station) to view the previously unreleased screening of the new Andy Serkis film, 'Breathe' (which i have analysed already on my blog -  https://jamie-pitcher-film-studies.blogspot.co.uk/2017/10/film-analysis-breathe-directed-by-andy.html ). The experience as a whole was enjoyable and left me feeling content (however i feel like I could have gathered a larger variety of photographs so as to truly capture the trip as a whole, I could have perhaps improved upon this further by bringing a higher resolution camera).

Film Analysis - ' The Grand Budapest Hotel' (Directed by Wes Anderson)

Film Studies / Jamie Pitcher / 04.10.2017 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXRztrOK47I The film ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’ (directed by Wes Anderson) is a master piece set primarily in 1932 that makes exquisite use of Mr Anderson’s filming technique of keeping everything in the shot centred, this helps to create a uniqueness that lingers in every scene of the 1 hour and 40 minute film. The films plot features two main characters, Mr Gustav H (The hotel’s concierge) and Zero (the hotel’s lobby boy), these protagonists are both quirky in character and possess a sort of profound honesty that separates them from the protagonists of other films. The story truly begins once it is revealed that Gustav’s lover, an elderly rich woman has perished and has suddenly written him into her will as the owner of a priceless painting called ‘Boy with Apple’, this cause discord within her still living distant and close relatives, especially her son who declares that the painting will not be taken b
